Grants Writing and Management Training and Services
The scope of TNG’s grants writing and grants management training and services is both basic and comprehensive as to grants writing. Grants writing and grants management capacity-building training and technical assistance services are only offered in a comprehensive format.
Grants Writing Training. At scheduled intervals, The Nominal Group offers 3 to 5-day workshops in grants writing training, which are open to the public. Personalized, tailor-made training for requesting organizations is also provided (e.g., for HIV/AIDS/STD prevention, substance abuse prevention, crime and violence prevention, or for faith-based outreach programs). Topics addressed include:
- Organizational, Program Development, and Grant Writing Interrelatedness. The aim of this instruction is to assist the participants in understanding and articulating the relationship between the aims of the potential funding agency, the grant application, and the organization’s mission, structure, capacity, relationship to the community, assessment of needs, and program plan, goals and objectives. The significance of organizational and program planning, record-keeping, and documents to effective grant writing is highlighted.
- Preparing to Write the Grant. Understanding the principles of fund raising as they affect the successful targeting of proposals for grant awards and cultivation of potential donors is essential to successful grant writing. Participants will be trained in research techniques via electronic (internet) and written media.
- Writing the Grant. Participants will be encouraged to select a realistic opportunity for their organization, and will be guided through the actual preparation of a grant application. The trainees will learn to identify, explain, and develop the essential elements commonly expected in a typical grant application for corporate, foundation, state, and federal agencies. The participants will be specifically trained to:
- Assess the writing and other skills needed to effectively complete a grant application, including involvement of other staff;
- Develop a work plan to ensure successful development, review, and evaluation of the application before the due date;
- Respond to new and stringent requirements of federal health funding sources, such as:
- How to develop effective performance measures and performance-measured evaluation, and how to outline strategies for management of the grant by results;
- How to design and implement a performance management system.
- How to link performance measures to budget and staff.
